GALWAY HOSPITAL STAFF ON STRESS-RELATED LEAVE OVER SAVITA CASE

Galway Bay Fm Newsroom.

SOME of the staff at Galway's University Hospital have taken stress-related leave due to the impact of the Savita Halappanaver case and its aftermath.

This has been confirmed by the Chief Executive of Galway University Hospitals Bill Maher according to a report in "The Sunday Business Post".

Mr Maher says he was "truly sorry" that Savita had received "substandard care" at the Galway hospital but he hoped her death would not "define" the hospital or "the staff who deliver excellent care on a regular basis".

His statement on the stress-related impact on staff at the Galway hospitlal comes just days after the report of the independent inquiry into Savita's death was published.

He said it had been "an incredibly stressful time" for staff at the hospital who had been subjected to a barrage of "obscene" hate mail from all over the world.

Mr Maher agreed that the independent report published in recent days made for "devastating reading" for Savita's husband Praveen Halappanivar and he added that he was "genuinely sorry" for what happened and what he had gone through.
