Galway County Council is hiring quality control experts to ensure material used to fill potholes is up to scratch.

Senior Roads Engineer, Conrad Harley confirmed the local authority had engaged an independent company to ensure the material used by contractors on roads in County Galway this summer was of sufficient quality.

The quality control testing will take place this summer on road improvement schemes, including potholes and resurfacing works, this summer.

The quality of bitumen and stone will be tested by the company, he said.

Samples of materials from various contractors will be taken across the county in all Municipal District areas, Mr Harley said.

He responded to County Councillor Martin McNamara (Ind) at the latest Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District meeting.

Councillor McNamara sought assurances about the quality of materials. He said concerns were previously raised that potholes were only being dealt with temporarily because of the poor quality of the material used to fill them.

“What quality assurances mechanism is in place?” he asked.

The meeting heard that a total of 23 roads restoration improvement projects are earmarked for Athenry/Oranmore MD this year with a €2.4m investment.

A further €550,000 was being spent on 13 restoration maintenance projects in the area.

Works were ongoing in five other discretionary grant projects with more than €83,000 allocated.
