Galway County Councillor Tomás Grealish has been elected as Cathaoirleach of the Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District.

Councillor Grealish from Carnmore was elected unopposed at the area’s MD meeting at County Hall on Tuesday.

An Independent councillor first elected in 2024, he is a brother of Galway West TD and Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Noel Grealish.

He was elected as chair of the MD unopposed after being proposed by Fine Gael’s Peter Feeney and Fianna Fáil’s Seán Broderick.

Councillor Grealish replaces Maree man, Councillor Cillian Keane (FF) in the chair.

Thanking Councillor Keane for his services over the past year, the new Cathaoirleach told the AGM that if he was “as efficient and accurate” as his predecessor he would be happy.

There were lots of issues to deal with in the year ahead, said Councillor Grealish who added: “It’s not easy being a councillor with all the stuff coming at us”.

Liam Hanrahan, Director of Services for Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District, thanked Councillor Keane for how he chaired meetings that went ‘smoothly’.

Councillor Broderick was elected Leas-Cathaoirleach.
