Thermo King are planning a new Research & Development building – which will house up to 75 staff – at their site on the Monivea Road to help boost product development.

The transport refrigeration and heating company has sought permission to build a 1,120 square metre two-storey office building with research laboratories, test yard to the rear and carparking.

“The proposed development will provide a more permanent home for many engineers already working in the area of R&D (within portable cabins which will be removed upon completion of this building) on the existing manufacturing site.

“The new building will also provide much-needed expansion space for the growing R&D engineering group; the primary goal being to expand engineering capabilities to improve product development in terms of quality, deliver and cost.

“The new building in line with best international standards also improves environmental health and safety by allowing for segregation of activities: workshop, laboratory testing, component validation, etc.

“The Galway manufacturing facilities, which is in operation since 1976, is one of the brand’s most important manufacturing facilities, which builds a wide range of Thermo King truck and trailer refrigeration units. Key to the company’s ongoing success within the marketplace is its engineering/R&D division,” the planning application reads.

The company employs more than 500 people in Galway – the new R&D building would hold 73 workers, 13 of whom would be new recruits.

A decision on the application is expected from Galway City Council in April.
