Return to pre-pandemic title race is Galway’s preference

THE Galway Football Committee is hoping that they will not have to shorten their county championships – as they did in 2020 – and, time allowing, they will run these competitions as they did pre-pandemic.
Due to the shorter club window last year, the championships were run off in groups of four, with each team playing at least four games. However, at an online meeting of the Galway Football Committee this week, a desire was expressed to return to the former system. This would mean, at senor level for example, the 18 teams would be divided into groups of six.
Speaking to Tribune Sport this week, Chairman Kevin Clancy stressed that, of course, this depended greatly on the time that would be available to county boards to play their club games and, more importantly, on NPHET guidelines and Government restrictions.
In any event, while the structure for 2021 has been agreed upon in principle, Clancy conceded that, beyond this, the Committee was unable to make championship draws or put a calendar of events together due to the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of GAA action.
“So, we are constrained as to what can do at the moment because we can’t put a calendar together,” said the Chairman. “The key decision which has to be made now, nationally, is how the inter-county structure will take shape given the recent delays, and the impact that this will have, because it will dictate and determine when the club window is.”
Reiterating that the Committee’s preference is to run a longer championship to give its club players more games – with promotion and relegation continuing as one up and one down – he acknowledged that this could only happen if time permitted.
