NUIG lost memory stick with details of 900 students

Galway City Tribune - Some 900 students at NUI Galway were told this week that their personal data may have been stored on a device that cannot be located by the university.
The potential data protection breach occurred when a non-encrypted portable device (a USB stick), that may have been used to store a confidential file containing a list of students, was mislaid – and is now presumed lost, according to a statement from the university.
The extent of information on the device remains unclear, however it is believed to have contained the names of about 5 per cent of NUI Galway’s 18,000-strong student body.
As well as their names, the information stored may have also contained their student numbers and exam results. This is a preview only. To read the rest of this article, see this week's Galway City Tribune. Buy a digital edition of this week's paper here, or download the app for Android or iPhone.
