There were two Galway coffee spots very high up on the list

Ireland is roasting their competition in the coffee scene and unlike the footballers it’s Galway who holds the cup for the best.

Nine cafes in Ireland were named among Europe’s best but one of Galway’s finest has been ranked fifth at Europe’s 100 Best Coffee Shops Awards in Brussels.

Coffeewerk and Press on Quay Street steamed its way into the top five meeting the high standards used for judging from barista experience to innovation and quality.

It has been an integral part of the city since 2015 working with over 80 different coffee roasters while also running the Art publishing house Artwerk Press.

Owner Dan Ulrich said, “This one is going to take a few days to sink in. This moment truly belongs to our incredible team and to everyone who has been part of our journey over the years.

“To have nine Irish cafes featured on this list is incredible and speaks volumes about the passion, talent and standards within our industry. We’re exceptionally proud to be part of it.”

The husband and wife team behind Kali on the Upper Salthill Road, Enda and Laura, also shared their delight taking the 32nd spot on the list.

They said: “Along with eight other cafes in Ireland, what a list to be included in. Our green isle is doing the coffee industry proud.”

They added: “Thank you to all the judges and voters. We can’t quite believe it - our little space is doing so well on the European stage. Yup Salthill, yup Galway and yup Ireland.”
