A Galway swimmer made a big splash at the Irish Short Course Championships in the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin over the weekend.

Tuam’s Uiseann Cooke was the star of the championships after winning three gold medals in his favoured breastroke event.

And to make it an even more memorable occasion for Cooke, he broke the 200m Irish Senior breaststroke record by recording a time of 2:06:81, shaving 0.8 seconds off Darragh Greene’s three-year-old mark.

Cooke, currently based in Edinburgh University, had set the tone for the championships by winning the 100m breastroke title, before powering home in the 50m and 200m finals.

He also took a bronze in the 100m butterfly at an event which saw Galway Swimming Club’s Andrew Moore triumph in the 50m freestyle.
