City Council to take ‘control and oversight’ of Galway Docks

GALWAY Docks is set to come under ‘the control and oversight’ of the City Council over the coming years – a move that has been described as ‘massive’ by some councillors.
City Council Chief Executive, Brendan McGrath, outlined in a report to councillors this week the two options that the local authority had in relation to taking control of the Galway Harbour Company [which has charge of the Docks].
He said that as part of the National Ports Policy, Galway wasn’t designated as a Tier 1 or Tier 2 port of ‘national significance’ – it was a port of ‘regional significance’.
Along with four other ports of regional significance – Drogheda, Dun Laoghaire, New Ross and Wicklow – the National Ports Policy had decided that Galway would come under ‘the control and governance’ of the relevant local authority [the City Council].
Mr. McGrath said that the two options to be considered by the City Council were a ‘transfer of shareholding’ or alternatively the dissolution of the Galway Harbour Company: he was recommending the transfer of shareholding option.
A number of councillors said that the taking over of the port by the City Council was a huge decision that they would need far more detailed information on.
