From this week's Galway City Tribune - Hindsight is 2020 vision, but the 1996 sixth class of Scoil Chaitriona Senior, Renmore had a fair bit of foresight too!

A time capsule buried in the school grounds nearly 25 years ago by the pupils, along with their then teacher, Gerry Lawless, was unearthed last week – providing a blast from the past and an insight into their predictions for the future.

Back in February 1996, a time capsule was buried in the school grounds with the hope that it would be opened this year.

It was part of the ‘Vision 2020’ project run by the National Library to celebrate the European Nature Conservation Year in 1995.

The project had an environmental emphasis, explained Renmore native Carol Barrett, a teacher and past pupil at the school.

“A lot of schools participated and groups were issued with capsules and encouraged to look at their environment now, look at their environment in the past, and then predict the environment in the future,” she said.

Covid restrictions curtailed plans to unearth the capsule earlier this year, but Carol managed to organise an event just before Christmas. This is a shortened preview version of this article.
