The atmosphere was electric in the Nuns Island Theatre when Galway Cheshire residents, friends and family gathered to launch their new song, Castles in the Sky.

The song was written by the residents as part of a project funded by Galway City Council under the Creative Ireland programme entitled, “Finding Your Voice, a Creative Journey Through Song”.

The official video for the song, made by one of the residents, and another video which captured the process of writing and recording the song, was shown on the theatre’s big screen.

Deputy Mayor of Galway City Cllr Alan Cheevers, who opened the event, said he found the event really inspiring, and talked about how he took such pride in his longstanding association with Galway Cheshire.

During the project, various Music & Songwriting Workshops, were facilitated by music facilitator Martina Flaherty, during which the song, Castles in the Sky was written by participants.

One of the songwriters, Michelle Glynn enjoyed the challenge and said she was completely out of her comfort zone.

“I thought it was very enjoyable, it was great craic, talk about having a laugh,” she said.

Cheshire Social Supports Facilitator Mick Brown believes the writing and recording of the song, inspired confidence in both Cheshire Residents and Staff alike.

“It was a privilege to observe the fun experienced by Residents during the group sessions, and to see the growth in each participant as the project progressed,” he said.

Audio recording sessions were facilitated on-site in Galway Cheshire by Ardrahan-based producer/engineer, Paddy Jordan. Participants were recorded singing their composition 'Castles in the Sky'.

Cheshire Social Supports Facilitator, Ann Glennon outlined how participants worked as a group to write all the lyrics to the song – with a combination of great debate and enthusiastic collaboration.

“Like anything worthwhile, it was challenging at times, but participants turned up every week, the outcomes of the project were achieved,” she said.
