An American professor of anthropology is to spend a month on the streets of Galway carrying out his research on buskers.

Dr Adam Kaul, Professor of Anthropology from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois will be a Research Fellow at the Moore Institute of NUI Galway.

The professor, who fell in love with Ireland and in particular County Clare and Galway City, following a backpacking trip in 1998, will be listening, watching and talking to both buskers and their street audiences.

From June 7 until July 7, Dr Kaul will not only be enjoying what the different buskers have to offer but also finding out what impact they have, if any, on the public.

Dr Kaul will be conducting interviews, focus groups and observing the buskers on Shop Street taking into account how both tourists and local people like them and how regulatory measures have impacted on the activity.

He told the Galway City Tribune that he picked Shop Street for its vibrancy and abundance of buskers, the biggest, he said, outside of Grafton Street in Dublin.
