FARMING and the GAA will come together in the famed South Galway hurling stronghold of Ardrahan in a novel fundraising venture.

The Ardrahan club – winner of the County Cup on 11 different occasions, the last time being 1978 – have lined up a team of local farmers and sponsors in a calf-rearing scheme to be launched this weekend.

Farmers taking part can either decide to rear one of their own calves for a six-to-eight-month period or alternatively rear a calf given by a donor.

The cost of rearing the calves will be covered by donors and sponsors with the animals then being sold as weanlings and all proceeds going to the local club.

Over recent years, the Ardrahan club have been involved in a major expansion of facilities including the provision of a state-of-the-art Astro-Turf pitch with Wall Ball, and two full size GAA fields with more work in the pipeline.

Ardrahan Chairperson, Joe Callanan, said that the expansion of facilities had been undertaken to meet the recreational needs of the local community.

The ‘Calves to Cash’ project will be launched this Saturday night (Feb. 26) in Bradleys of Labane with the aim being ‘to combine the energy of the local vibrant farming community with the generosity of its supporters’.

“Fundraising is something we constantly need to do, and we are always looking at new ways to raise funds. Many of our members are farmers and in response to a request for fundraising suggestions, five of them got together to organise this scheme,” said Joe Callanan.

The five ‘volunteers’ are: William Thompson, Patrick Whelan, Darragh Healy, Aonghusa Fahy and Eanna Callanan and they have taken to their task with great gusto.

Aonghusa Fahy said that the parish was very lucky to have a strong GAA club which provided a great service to the local community.
