Farmers on target for climate guidelines

FARMERS – if treated fairly – should be well positioned to deal with the demands and targets of the recently published Climate Action and Low Carbon Bill, 2021, according to Galway IFA Environmental Representative, Henry Walsh.

He told the Farming Tribune that ‘education and knowledge transfer’ principles would be a key factor in farmers being able to comply with a commitment that aims to have Ireland ‘carbon neutral’ by 2050.

“There are four key areas where a significant number of farmers are already making good progress on, which fit in with the principles and aims of the new Bill – these are in lime usage, the change to protected urea, greater use of clover and in low emission slurry spreading (LESS),” said Henry Walsh.

He added that the adoption of those four practices would be critical to farmers achieving the targets set out for the agricultural sector in Ireland – and all of them were in the ‘achievable’ category.

“What our Government and our political leaders must ensure is that Irish farmers – among the most efficient in the world at producing environmentally friendly dairy and meat products – are not restricted in terms of what they produce.

“It would not make any sense, for example, to restrict environmentally friendly milk production in Ireland and to allow it to increase in other countries where the same standards do not apply,” said Henry Walsh.
