Drowned forest emerges west of Spiddal following stormy conditions

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Parts of a drowned forest along the Galway coastline has been exposed due to recent storm conditions.

Tree stumps and root systems from the ancient woodland west of Spiddal are visible at low tide.

NUIG Professor Michael Williams says Ireland experienced a series of rapid sea level rises some five thousand years ago which flooded the western seaboard.

He told Galway Talks that the forest would have drowned at quite a fast pace.
