Driver has lucky escape as rock thrown at windscreen

Gardaí are investigating an incident in which a rock was thrown at the windscreen of a moving car in a daylight attack.
In a lucky escape for the driver, the windscreen shattered, but the rock did not pass through.
The incident occurred at around 5.30pm on Monday of last week, as the car was driving along by the canal off Presentation Road.
It’s believed that two youths, aged about 17, threw the rock, causing around €200 worth of damage to the car.
The motorist involved told the Galway City Tribune: “There was a car coming towards me, so if I swerved, God knows what could have happened. Or if the rock bounced off the car and hit one of the children at the canal, it could have killed them. St Joseph must have been looking out.”
There was a couple with their grandchildren standing close to the car when the incident occurred, and they believed a tyre had blown out.
“It was a very loud bang, and I just stopped the car. I knew straight away that it was a rock when I saw the windscreen,” she said.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have been in the area at the time and seen anything suspicious – or witnessed the attack – to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538000.
