Devon face Wexford in proverbial relegation six pointer

SALTHILL Devon will look to turn their season around when they face fellow First Division strugglers, Wexford Youths, in a pivotal Airtricity League clash in Drom on Sunday (3pm).

Rooted to the bottom of the table, Devon can close the three-point gap to their nearest rivals with a home win, although Wexford would still remain a place above them on goal difference.

However, failure to secure a result in this vital First Division fixture will cut the Galway City outfit adrift at the foot of the table and almost certainly leave them fighting another relegation battle in late Autumn. For this one, manager Paul McGee can select from a full hand after captain James Whelan recovered from a hip injury he picked up in the 4-1 defeat away to Shelbourne two weeks ago.

Indeed, Devon have made good use of the Summer break since that game, using the time to continue their training in an effort to bring some of their new recruits up to speed. “Given our position in the league, we couldn’t afford to take our foot off the pedal and relax,” adds McGee. “We need to get a result, be it a draw or a win, against Wexford.”

Although Devon will hope to make home advantage tell, McGee observes that Wexford Youths’ three league wins this season have all been registered away from home. Incredibly, those victories over Limerick FC, Finn Harps and Waterford United were all 1-0 results.
