Proposals for a new residential development in Moycullen have been lodged with Galway County Council.

Castlestar Development Group is planning to build 48 houses as part of a new mixed-use development at Ballyquirke in the centre of the village, at a site opposite The Forge bar.

Some 14 of the homes will be one-beds, assisted living units designed specifically to meet the needs of older people, who may not want to live in nursing homes. A total of eleven of the homes will be three-bed and 23 will be two-beds.

Other facilities planned for the development include a public park and playground, new crèche, and a community café/dayroom linked to the assisted living units.

“Our vision is to deliver a high-quality cluster of 14 homes specifically dedicated to senior citizens as part of a wider development of 48 houses,” a spokesperson for the developer said.

“The cluster of 14 homes is designed specifically for elderly people who wish to live independently in a central village location and in a secure neighbourhood location where the residents live in a friendly and safe environment where they can remain active in their social, spiritual and recreational activities, connected to their family, friends and the wider community,” they added.

The homes for older people will include widened doorways, alarm and surveillance systems, audio and visual intercom, ground-floor bath and toilet facilities, walk-in showers, non-slip floor surfaces, ground floor bedroom, and low maintenance gardens.

The developers said that one of the benefits of providing a cluster of homes that are specifically designed to meet the needs of older people, is that a tailor-made support package, can also be designed to support the residents.

This, according to the developer, includes home care packages, a community café and day room managed by a residents’ committee, “which will provide a focal point for communal activities and services”, as well as other services.

The planning application was lodged last week and can be inspected at County Hall, with observations and submissions to be lodged to planners within five weeks of the application.

A NIS (Natura Impact Statement) was submitted with the application.
