He has missed two sittings in a row

A "globetrotting" Romanian man accused of theft and public order offences in Galway has been warned he must show up for his next court appearance.

Denis Makula (24), with addresses at Gleann Na Rí, Doughiska and Ard Na Coiste, Headford Road, is charged with stealing JBL speakers and headphones worth €638 from Harvey Norman's, Galway Retail Park, Knocknacarra on July 4, 2024, contrary to section 4 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.

He is also charged with engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or being reckless as to whether a breach of the peace may be occasioned, contrary to section 6 of the Public Order Act.

That charge arises from an alleged incident at Fána Glas Ballybane on May 21, 2024.

The case was listed at Galway District Court but when it was called, defence barrister, Garry McDonald BL, said his client was not present.

He said Denis Makula recently went to Romania with his family to support a brother who has mental health issues and is subject to an exclusion order from this jurisdiction.

Judge John King said he noted from the file that on a previous date when the accused was supposed to be in court, he was in the United Kingdom.

Judge King remarked to Mr McDonald that it "sounds like they are globetrotting".

Mr McDonald replied that any globetrotting only took in Doughiska, the UK and Romania.

Inspector Brian Ryan said it was the State's application for the case to be adjourned to October 12 and for a bench warrant not to issue before that date.

Judge King said the accused should be in court on that date or a bench warrant would issue for his arrest.
