A 24 year old Co. Galway man has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register after pleading guilty at Galway District Court to sexually assaulting a childhood friend.

The man pleaded guilty this week, to sexually assaulting the 23 year old woman at a rented house in the City on November 9th, 2008.

Garda Pauline Heveran said the victim and a group of friends, which included the accused, had been out socialising in Galway.

They all came back to stay at the woman’s house at 2.30 a.m.

The woman woke up at 5 a.m. to find the accused sexually assaulting her in her bed.

The woman, who was accompanied in court by her father and other family members told Judge Fahy that the accused had used alcohol as an excuse for the assault.

Judge Fahy noted the man had pleaded guilty to the offence and she placed him on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.

The Judge adjourned the matter to December 16th, so that the accused man’s solicitor, could obtain reports on her client prior to sentencing.
