Galway East TD Paul Connaughton says relocating the city based Department of Agriculture office to Athenry would make better financial sense.

It's been mooted that the current office at Dockgate in the city, which acts on behalf of over 13 thousand farmers, will soon be moved to another office in Galway city.

The Fine Gael TD claims rents of up to 900 thousand euro are being paid for the Dockgate premises.

Deputy Connaughton plans to meet the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to discuss the issue over the next few weeks.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, he says relocating to Athenry instead of the city would be a cost saving measure for the Governement while maintaining services for the farming community
