A young mother who told Judge Mary Fahy she did not think cannabis was a drug but always thought of it as a plant, pleaded guilty to cultivating the “plant” when she appeared before Galway District Court. The comments made by Lorraine McKenna, of 95 Friar’s Hill, Rahoon drew a strong reaction from Judge Mary Fahy.Following a talk with her solicitor Ms McKenna thought better of what she had said and apologised to Judge Fahy.Hearing McKenna had no previous convictions for drug-related offences, Judge Fahy adjourned the matter to June 23, for the preparation of a Community Service Report to assess McKenna’s suitability to carry out work in her community. She directed that if Lorraine McKenna is deemed suitable she is to carry out 130 hours of community service instead of a five-month prison sentence.
