City to mark Mandela's passing with cathedral memorial service

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The city is to mark the passing of Nelson Mandela with a special memorial service on Saturday.

The service for the former South African President will be held at the Cathedral at midday.

Mayor of Galway Padraig Conneely will officiate at the memorial while the South African Ambassador to Ireland Jeremiah Azwindini Ndoo is also expected to attend.

The former South African President, who opposed apartheid, passed away at his home in Johannesburg last week.

His passing was also raised at a meeting of Galway City Council last evening where Cllr Tom Costello proposed a vote of sympathy.

He visited Galway in June 2003 to accept an Honorary Law Degree from NUIG.

Mayor Conneely says the event gives the city an opportunity to remember a great world leader.
