CITY COUNCIL DENIES ROADWORKS SOLE CAUSE OF TRAFFIC CHAOS

Date Published: 23-Aug-2011
Galway City Council is urging motorists to plan their journey into the city in advance to try and prevent traffic jams, such as those experienced yesterday.
Delays of several hours were experienced across Galway city for most of the day yesterday.
Roadworks are underway at University Road and the Newcastle junction at the end of the Quincentenary Bridge aswell as at Séamus Quirke Road.
Many city arteries ground to a halt and most roundabouts were congested.
The City Council says the work can't be carried out at night as it would cause noise disruption to local residents.
Speaking on the Keith Finnegan Show today, Director of Services with the City Council, Ciarán Hayes denied that the roadworks were solely responsible for the delays.
He said there was a large amount of traffic and is urging people to stagger their journeys.
