City based Garda drugs unit up-skilling county counterparts
The figures were revealed at a meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee today. (14/10)
The largest amount of drugs seized was cannabis, worth 64 thousand euro, followed by 11 and a half thousand euro worth of cocaine.
Other drugs seized include ecstasy, heroin and mephedrone.
There was a 14 percent increase in the incidence of drugs for sale or supply and a 10 percent increase in simple possession of drugs in the city.
Chief Superintendent of the Galway Garda Division, Tom Curley, told the meeting that there are 20 to 25 hardcore dealers of drugs and there is an issue regarding heroin use in particular.
However, he said the bigger seizures of drugs would be in the county, where growhouses have been located.
Gardaí from stations around the county will be brought in for special training with the Drugs Unit based in the city.
Chief Superintendent, Tom Curley says it's an initiative to increase the number of drugs busts in Galway.
