Street furniture on Society Street should be removed to prevent gangs gathering outside local businesses in Ballinasloe.

That's according to local Councillor Cathal Concannon who addressed last night's meeting of the Joint Policing Committee.

Ballinasloe Gardaí denied claims that groups of teenagers are holding the town to ransom and 'terrorising' shop owners.

Inspector Aidan Foley told the Committee that no such reports had been made to local Gardaí.

However, Ballinasloe Superintendent Margaret Nugent, said there had been 74 arrests for public order offences in the town in the last 3 months.
