Bed push to UHG in effort to save Ballinasloe psychiatric unit
Galway Bay fm newsroom - A group of protestors opposed to the closure of a 22-bed acute psychiatric unit in Ballinasloe pushed a hospital bed from Galway Cathedral to University Hospital Galway earlier this afternoon.
The group of almost 50 people carried banners which read 'Hands off our Hospital' and handed a letter of protest to HSE management at the city public hospital.
It comes ahead of the first transfer of the psychiatric beds from Ballinasloe to the UHG campus next Monday.
Meanwhile, senior clinical staff in East Galway are still seeking an independent external review over the decision to close the unit.
HSE management say the move is part of the implementation of vision for change.
These protestors in the city today told our reporter Úna Molloy that they feel it is a ludicrous decision.
