IRISH army members who died in past wars and on peacekeeping duties were remembered at a ceremony at NUI Galway earlier today.

In glorious sunshine those in attendance heard religious leaders read prayers and vereses in rememberance of the Irish army dead while Mayor of Galway City Padraic Conneely laid a wreath in their memory at the plaque in the Quadrangle.

The event was attended by other members of the city council, the Mayor of Co Galway Cllr Liam Carroll, current army officers and members, as well as retired veterans.

Two of the retired veterans in attendence were former Quartermaster Brendan Conway and ex-Private Hugh Logue.

Retired Quartermaster Conway said the ceremony was an important one to acknowledge the contribution of Irish soldiers who had lost their lives in the course of duty both at home and abroad.Meanwhile retired Private Hugh Logue recalled his time in the army both at home and on UN duty in Cyprus.

After the last post was sounded by the trumpeters and drummers the Irish flag was raised and soloist Frank Naughton and St Patrick's Brass Band brought the ceremony to a close with their rendition of the Irish National Anthem.
