Another vehicle stuck under bridge as warnings go unheeded

Galway City Council has issued a warning to drivers to note the height of their vehicle, after yet another van became stuck under the bridge on the Dyke Road.
The delivery van became wedged and caused lengthy traffic delays in both directions.
The Northern Ireland-registered 2014 Iveco Daily van had to have its tyres deflated and was then winched back out from under the bridge.
The bridge is regularly hit throughout the year by vans and trucks, despite advance warning signage on both sides of the bridge and on the approach roads.
Aluminium warning ‘goalposts’ on either side – which also use hanging chains and visual and audio alerts to drivers – have had to be removed for repairs.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council said: “The barriers have been hit so many times, they have had to be removed for repairs. There are warning signs on both sides of the bridge, and there is advance signage on the approach roads.
“Every driver should know the height of their van, both laden and unladen. That is drivers’ responsibility.
“It is very hard to legislate for drivers who do not take adequate care and it causes issues. That bridge is very low,” said the spokesperson.
