Galway In Days Gone By

1925
Wasting time
Our Urban Council in Galway never loses an opportunity of distinguishing itself. Whilst it has by far the worst roads in the county, it proposed at yesterday’s meeting to get a loan of £5,000 for the purpose of improving the footpaths!
Of course, it will not get the loan, so that the time is wasted in talk about it is just time wasted, and nothing more.
These futilities have gone to a point when they should be ended. At the same meeting, it was pointed out that there was an opportunity of having twenty-six additional houses for ex-servicemen erected at Fairhill. Did the Urban Council welcome the proposal and approve of the borough engineer’s plan to spend £900 on new roads, sewers, etc, for the houses?
Not a bit of it: the council did nothing at all to induce the spending of additional money, the giving of extra employment, the enhancement of the rateable value of the town, and the rescue of some of our citizens and ratepayers from the hovels that are a disgrace to civilisation. No, we prefer to fool the citizens by applying for imaginary loans – to make footpaths.
