BALLINASLOE'S Portiuncula Hospital is to get an extension of 50 single bed units.

The approval of the extension was confirmed by Bill Maher, Regional Manager with the HSE West at a staff function in Ballinasloe marking the retirement of the former General Manager of the hospital, Brigetta McHugh.

Portiuncula was the first hospital to use epidural anesthesia, for pain relief during labour, and now this is a standard obstetrics epidural service in most hospitals in the western world.

The proposed 50 bed extension will benefit all departments, but in particular maternity services, at the Ballinasloe hospital according to Deputy Michael Kitt.
