Galway punk-rock outfit Vulture Casino have released their debut single after earning a reputation as one of the city’s most energetic live acts over the course of the last eighteen months.  The band’s new track, titled Psycho Brain, is as brash and intense as one would expect but it retains undeniable hooks and a lyrical subject matter that challenges listeners to think.

Vulture Casino are Echo Harte, Jonathan Finn, Alan Casey and Naoise Jordan Cavanagh.

In punk music, the four-piece find themselves part of one of Ireland’s most exciting music scenes. And fittingly, Pyscho Brain was recorded with one of the pioneers of that community – Girl Band’s Daniel Fox.

“Recording with Daniel Fox was a new experience,” admits Echo, the band’s frontman.

“We’d never gone into a studio before with the band. I’ve been in a few studios myself but this was a different approach. Daniel is very good when it comes to mixing – he's the bass player for Girl Band who were one of the first strong influences we had, alongside Otherkin.

“Psycho Brain was one of the first songs we wrote together as a group. It was the first original song we polished off and all decided we were very happy with it. The lyrics deal with toxic masculinity and losing your temper – saying things you don’t really mean that can affect you and the people around you.

“We didn’t want to write a typical pop-punk song about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. We’re trying to get into subjects that not many people really talk about and this would be one [example of that] with mental health and toxic masculinity.”

Vulture Casino’s attempts to craft interesting and original lyrics mean many of their tracks deal with difficult or sensitive topics. They are looking far outside of Galway for inspiration and for stories that haven’t been given a voice here.

“We have another song coming called Genocide,” Echo notes.

“It’s inspired by some footage that we saw on Facebook of Nazi rallies going on in Charlottesville in the US. They’re essentially the KKK – they’re not wearing their costumes but they’re in broad daylight carrying around their confederate flags and doing the Nazi salute.
