Solid foundations to artistic collaboration

Film, architecture and music are in the mix this Sunday night, October 10, as Music for Galway and Architecture at the Edge join forces for a screening of two documentaries celebrating the work of Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Both are directed by Murray Grigor. The event, at the Town Hall Theatre, starts at 8pm.

Mackintosh focuses on the renowned architect’s approach and convictions, and on the extraordinary creation that is the Glasgow School of Art.  Space and Light, meanwhile, explores the remarkable modernist building of St Peter’s Seminary on the Firth of Clyde.

The original scores for both documentaries were written by British composer Frank Spedding.

These will be performed live for the occasion by the chamber music ensemble, Musici Ireland, conducted by Scottish conductor Rory Boyle, who studied composition with Spedding.

Film director Grigor Murray is renowned for focusing on art, particularly architecture. Two more of his films, In Search of Clarity: Gwathmey Siegel / Carlo Scarpa, will be shown at the city’s Pálás Cinema this Saturday at 3pm, after which there will be discussion with the director.

And it seems like this local musical-architectural collaboration has a bright future, as Music for Galway, Architecture at the Edge and the Galway Dance Project have been awarded a Capacity Grant from the Arts Council to embark on a feasibility study for a Music and Dance Centre.

The proposed centre would include a performance hall, rehearsal rooms, offices and café. The tendering process will be launched shortly.

Tickets to attend Sunday night’s event are €20/€18. For fulltime students, the cost is €6 and for MfG Friends it’s €16
