Shampain finds new place to uncork the musical fizz

It was 2019 when Cóilí Collins – performing under his musical alias Shampain – last headlined Galway in a sold-out Electric nightclub on Abbeygate Street…a venue that, in November of last year, sadly announced its permanent closure. The building was one that held particular significance for Cóilí, for years employing him and facilitating events that became standout highlights on the local calendar.
Indeed, be it through his label G-Town Records, his collective VSN World, or his vociferous support and promotion of Galway United, few acts can claim to have had a bigger impact on the city’s music scene in the last few years.
March 24 marks his return gig in Galway – an evening with Shampain in the Róisín Dubh. It is something of an unusual spot for dance music but, as many continue to argue, there are fewer and fewer viable alternatives. To counteract that, the Róisín will be modified on the night to reflect Cóilí’s act and to make the most of the live setting.
“That gig in 2019 was in a nice environment – a sold-out Electric,” he recalls.
“I was supposed to do a follow-up in May of 2020. It’s taken so long, obviously because of lockdown, but also because there are no clubs here at all. Any of the venues that are left, I’m just not that gone on them.
