Serious message and catchy songs from punk-infused Honeyblood

The lo-fi and punk-infused Honeyblood play a free show in Róisín Dubh on Thursday, April 6. Hailing from Glasgow and on the go since 2012, the band are Stina Tweeddale and (vocals/guitar) and Cat Myers (vocals/drums).
Honeyblood released their second album Babes Never Die last year. The hooky title track is delivered with a pristine Glaswegian twang and has a chorus that’ll stay in your head. The name of the song is taken from a tattoo that Stina had inked.
"I have those words tattooed on my ribs," Stina says in the band’s biography. "I guess you could call it a war cry; to have the faith, to never let yourself be defeated. I think it’s something I tell myself every day. Indifference is a plague. Giving up and turning a blind eye will be the end of us. Never before has that been more true than now. Perhaps we should stare straight into the face of what frightens us and say that we will never let them win.”
Brave words, and heartening for anyone who might feel the younger generation are feckless and a-political. Crucially, for someone in a band, Stina can also write some serious songs. A first listen to Babes Never Die will have you reaching for the replay button.
It’s a few weeks away, but it’s one to put in the diary.
