Piano magic with Barry Douglas

Belfast-born pianist Barry Douglas will open Music for Galway’s new season on Wednesday next, September 26, at the Emily Anderson Concert Hall, NUI Galway, with a concert that starts at 8pm.
The pianist will take his audience on a journey through the year with Tchaikovsky’s popular The Seasons. Two Schubert sonatas will follow; the first, D. 537 in A minor, is the first the composer completed – at just 19 years old, he had already found his voice. The second sonata, which will close the evening, is D. 664 in A major, a gentle melodic piece.
The theme for Music for Galway’s current season is Wanderlust, exploring how travel and movement have enriched music by nurturing the cross-fertilisation of ideas and skills. And Barry Douglas who has toured extensively throughout his career, showcasing his talent worldwide, is an ideal person to open the season, according to MfG’s Executive Director, Anna Lardi Fogarty.
Having established himself internationally by winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, he now combines a busy touring schedule with his role as Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and County Down’s Clandeboye Festival.
Barry opened the 17/18 season performing Tchaikovsky with Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, and then began new collaborations with the Endellion String Quartet and the Borodin Quartet. The previous year, he marked the 30th anniversary of his win in Moscow by performing Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto cycles with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin and the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast.
