Peruvian master drummer for special Galway clinic
The Rhythm Drum School will present a Drum Clinic with Peruvian multi-instrumentalist Coté Calmet next Thursday, June 16 in the City’s The Loft Venue.
Born in Lima, to a musical family, Calmet was exposed to many genres of music from an early age, including Brazilian, Peruvian, Salsa, rock, and jazz. This inspired him to start learning guitar and to begin playing drums at the age of 15. By the age of 18, his music career started to blossom, as he recorded CDs with local musicians and worked as a session drummer with different bands as well as playing live shows. While still a student, he was asked to direct his first masterclass in rhythm and performance at The Universidad Catolica del Peru, which has one of the country’s largest and most renowned music departments.
Calmet is primarily an improviser but is also fascinated with architectural music. Having moved to Dublin to continue his musical education at Newpark Music Centre, he is now regarded as one of that city’s most versatile drummers, as well as being a big force in musical education and composition. While attending his final year at Newpark in 203, Calmet recorded his debut album with a group he had founded called Phisqa, which featured some of the best young musicians in Dublin
Calmet's star continues to rise, thanks, most recently, to his work with two groups, The CEO Experiment and Manden Express.
Piano trio The CEO Experiment recently recorded a CD with acclaimed Irish saxophonist Michael Buckley. The taented trio have shared stages with the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet, Tom Rainey's Obbligato and New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott. They have been tagged by critics as ‘the next step’ in jazz piano trios in Dublin.
Meanwhile, Manden Express have reached audiences from Dublin to African, winning fans for their feel-good Malian rhythms.
Coté Calmet’s Drum Clinic will kick off at 7.30pm next Thursday, June 16 in the Loft, and the cost is €10.
