Nostalgia on menu Bagatelle play in Abbeyknockmoy

One of the great musical sounds of the 1980s, that of iconic Irish rock band Bagatelle, can be heard next weekend (July 10) in the North Galway area, when they play a ‘one night only’ gig in the Abbey Inn, Abbeyknockmoy.
Abbey Inn proprietors, Gerry Delaney and Paddy Mannion, are expecting a sell-out crowd for the concert that will feature all the greatest hits of a band whose early music is said to have inspired U2.
Some of their main hits included Second Violin, Leeson Street Lady and Summer in Dublin – the latter song tripping off the lips of anyone with an interest in the Irish rock/pop scene of the 1980s.
Bagatelle, whose origins are in Bray, Co Wicklow, were formed in 1978, with the band made up of Liam Reilly on keyboards, Ken Doyle on bass, John O’Brien on guitar and Wally McConville with the drumsticks.
They shot to fame in 1980 when Summer in Dublin went straight to number one in the charts as Liam Reilly’s song about the capital – ‘as it was’ – caught the imagination of the country.
Reilly’s line about the ‘drunk on the bus who told him how to get rich’ is now part of Irish lore, but the band have also a huge collection of original material released in a series of CDs through the 1980s and early 1990s.
Abbey Inn co-proprietor, Ger Delaney, said that the concert on Friday night, July 10, was a ‘one off’ opportunity for lovers of music to hear at first hand, one of our most famous Irish bands.
“We’re delighted to be able to bring Bagatelle to the Abbey Inn venue and we’re hoping to sell out the event over the coming week. It promises to be a great concert,” said Ger Delaney.
A massive night’s entertainment is on the cards from nine o clock on, with Bagatelle supported by D Day Band while after the Bagatelle concert, Freebird Disco will keep the music flowing.
Tickets are priced at a very reasonable €15 for such a big act and are available from Paddy Mannion and Ger Delaney at Mannion’s Bar or from a number of other outlets. The show starts at 8.30.
