Music for Galway’s Artistic Director Finghin Collins and its Executive Director Anna Lardi Fogarty are buzzing as they enter McCambridge’s Restaurant fresh from the launch of MfG’s annual programme the previous night.  And they have reason to be happy.

The organisation is providing the flagship elements of the classical music programme for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and has a feast of events in store.

The organist at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Mark Duley, and director of its college of singers bounds up the restaurant stairs, also full of beans.

He has come on board as MfG Artistic Director for this season, to oversee several projects that he had devised for Galway 2020. The Capital of Culture team loved his proposals but as Mark didn’t have the administrative infrastructure to implement them, suggested that he and MfG join forces for the year.

That’s what’s happened, making for the exciting programme that is Soundscapes.

The upcoming season will include the inaugural Cellissimo, a cello festival which will kick off in April in the city and county and will be held every three years from then on. Star cellists from all over the world will join forces for the event which will feature performances from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Concert Orchestra. Works by composers such as Bach, Hayden, Vivaldi and Elgar will be performed as will newer compositions, including the Crouching Tiger Concerto by Tan Dun.
