New €60 million Galway hospital surgical hub delayed after water leak causes extensive damage

The leak occurred during the final phases of construction at the €60 million facility, and has necessitated a programme of “corrective works” to address damage
The opening of the new surgical hub at Merlin Park Hospital, which was due to take place in the coming weeks, has been delayed until the second half of next year after a water leak caused extensive damage in the building.
The leak occurred during the final phases of construction at the €60 million facility, and has necessitated a programme of “corrective works” to address damage caused by the ingress, the Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed.
The surgical hub had been expected to open in November but the setback has delayed the handover from the building contractor to the hospital. This is now anticipated in the second quarter of next year.
The handover will be followed by clinical commissioning works and fit-out, which is likely to push the opening of the state-of-the-art facility into the second half of 2027.
Hospital waiting lists will now not benefit from the additional capacity provided by the new surgical hub until at least July 2027. More than 4,000 day-case surgeries could have been performed at Merlin Park during that period.
Crucially, Galway University Hospitals (GUH) will now face the prospect of a winter surge in the coming months without additional elective capacity at Merlin Park, meaning scheduled surgeries remain vulnerable to cancellation.
In a confidential letter from HSE management, seen by Galway Live, consultants were informed that the water leak in the surgical hub had caused “extensive damage”.
It said the handover of the new unit had been delayed until early next year as a result, and a “period of time” would then be required for clinical commissioning.
A spokeswoman for the HSE confirmed this week that a programme of corrective works is underway at the building following the water leak. She said the handover was now expected to take place in the second quarter of 2027.
Plans for the development of a regional elective surgical hub in Galway were first announced by the Government in December 2022. Similar facilities were also announced for Limerick, Waterford and Dublin.
The hub is expected to reduce waiting times in Galway by moving day-case procedures from University Hospital Galway (UHG) to Merlin Park, thereby improving patient flow and easing pressure on acute services.
When fully operational, it is expected to deliver around 10,000 day-case surgeries and minor procedures, as well as 18,500 outpatient consultations, each year. Surgical specialties at the facility will include dermatology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, urology, and general surgery.
