Miscellany50 – ‘a cultural milestone’

The publication of Miscellany50, a new book celebrating half a century of RTÉ radio’s iconic arts programme, Sunday Miscellany, is a milestone for Irish culture and the broadcaster, according to its editor Clíodhna Ní hAnluain.
The radio producer, who was at the helm of the weekly series for more than a decade, attended its Galway launch on Friday night at Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop in the city.
Miscellany50 contains 55 personal essays and poems, with many Galway contributions, including Lisa McInerney, Nuala O’Connor, Anne Marie Kennedy, Mary O’Malley and Louis de Paor. They read at the launch, as did fellow contributors, Brian Leyden, Mae Leonard and Enda Wyley.
A record of Ireland from unexpected often wonderful angles, Miscellany50 includes stories about the first moon landing, the eruption of violence in Northern Ireland, Ronald Reagan’s visit here, divorce, the X-case, 9/11, Direct Provision, the Celtic Tiger and its crash, great sporting moments, the Eurovision Song Contest, Edna O’Brien, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs and Sinéad O’Connor. Other topics include institutional abuse, emigration, moving statues, weather and water, first loves and first jobs, parenthood, illness, loss and starting over.
This unique collection, which is beautifully illustrated, was originally commissioned for a performance at the Miscellany50 Live radio festival weekend in late 2018.
