Luka Bloom for city concert, showcasing latest album Refuge

There’s a chance to see a true craftsman in action this Sunday, November 19, when Luka Bloom comes to the Róisín Dubh. Showcasing songs from his new album Refuge, Bloom will bring his distinctive guitar tone and impassioned voice to the Dominick Street venue.
The album opens with Water Is Life, a delicate ballad that sees Bloom delve into his concerns for the environment. It’s followed by the delicate Cello as Everest, where Bloom sings ‘I’m so old, but a child again.’ Indeed, aged 61, Bloom sounds as vital and enthused by his craft as ever.
The younger brother of Christy Moore, who recorded Luka’s song, In the City of Chicago, he is part of a musical family – but chose the state name Luka Bloom in order to forge his own musical identity. He had released three album under the name Barry Moore but was unhappy with how they performed.
He is happy being on the road, however, touring regularly and releasing new albums. He’s also fond of recording other people’s songs, and did a great version of Bob Dylan’s To Make You Feel My Love – a song which enjoyed massive success when it was covered by Adele.
Luka Bloom really puts on a great live show offering something that manages to be gentle and intriguing. Well worth taking a punt on.
■ Tickets €22.50/€20 members.
