Arts Week with Judy Murphy

'Before', the one-man show from Pat Kinevane, presented by Fishamble: The New Play Company, is among the theatrical highlights of this year’s Shorelines Arts Festival which will run in Portumna from September 19-22. A play “with much music”, it set in Clery’s of Dublin, on the day the iconic department store shuts for good.

Arán agus Im, a show with writer and TV presenter Manchán Magan will offer insights into farming and food ‘as Gaeilge’, and will include homemade bread, served with butter churned by the audience.

The improv show, Wingin’ It will feature a cast of experienced Irish performers who will be guided by suggestions from the audience. And a classic work will be revived when Peter Duffy presents Patrick Kavanagh’s The Great Hunger.

There’s family entertainment from Branar Téatar do Pháistí, presenting their first music show. Rockin’ Rhymes features original songs based on well-loved nursery rhymes.

Shorelines will present a broad variety of music, literature, film and visual art, as well as family-friendly events and a schools’ programme.

Literary events will include Mark Boyle, author of the Way Home; Tales from a Life Without Technology, in conversation with Manchán Magan on Sunday, September 22.  Mark Boyle has chosen to live a life in rural Ireland, close to nature, without modern technology, including electricity and running water, and he’ll be discussing that way of life.

The literary strand also includes memoirist and fiction writer Brian Leyden, poet Thomas McCarthy, performance poet Tony Walsh and short-story writer Nicole Flattery.

For younger audiences, Galway writer Patricia Forde will read from her hit book Bumpfizzle in schools in and around Portumna.
