Kids go centre stage for Cruinniú na nÓg

Arts Week with Judy Murphy
A discussion between artists Kathy Ross Jojo Hynes, Midie Corcoran and Jennifer Cunningham on Zoom during lockdown has resulted in an exhibition that’s being presented in Tuam next Saturday, June 12, as part of Cruinniú na nÓg, the national festival of creativity for young people.
As the four talked about the impact of Covid and lockdown on young people in their community, they decided to create a multi-disciplinary series of workshops for pupils in Cahergeal National School, near Tuam. As Kathy explains, the aim was to help them collaborate and discover through “experimenting with materials, journeying with storytelling, and playing through performance.
“Over the last five weeks we have been working with the children of third and fourth class on a series of workshops entitled Exploring Outside the Box”, she says.
The four artists reimagined local landmarks to create fantastical fun narratives that were inspired by escapism as they encouraged the children to explore beyond the ‘box’ that had been imposed on them since March 2020 as a result of Covid.
The result is this exhibition, which was curated by the children and will be on display in the windows of Tuam Library on Saturday, June 12.
Because of ongoing Covid restrictions, it’s one of the very few in-person events being staged for this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg. However, a host of free online events and workshops, from computer coding to sean-nós singing, will take place to celebrate the world’s only national day of creativity for young people.
