Karen’s 'Pressure' in the spotlight

Images by Galway-based artist Karen Conway will go centre stage in the city this Saturday night, as part of a community art-science project between CÚRAM, the NUIG-based Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Medical Devices, and Galway City Arts Office.

The installations, in Ballybane and at the Spanish Arch, are for National Science Week.

Karen was chosen last year to create this arts-science project for CÚRAM, working with communities in Ballybane and Doughiska on the eastside of the city.

She liaised with CÚRAM researchers who specialise in cardiovascular research and wearable devices, as well as exploring and photographing laboratory techniques in the facility’s laboratories.

The result is Pressure, a series of pencil-and-ink drawings which incorporate the theme of active travel for heart-health. That theme was chosen in conjunction with a liaison panel made up of community representatives from the areas involved, Karen explains.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to work with all the CÚRAM/NUI scientists in the laboratories and learn about their research,” she says.  “It was especially inspiring to explore this art/science connection through engagement with the amazing students of Merlin College, with the young people in the Ard Centre, Doughiska, and the children who attended the Ballybane Library workshop.”
