Home on the Range the theme of online storytelling session

Participants will be telling stories from the length and breadth of Ireland on Wednesday next, May 20, starting at 7.30pm.  The theme of the evening is Home on the Range.

Moth and Butterfly is a popular arts storytelling night that incorporates improvisation, true stories and fictional tales.

The group, made up of professional performers, writers, and storytellers, was founded by local storyteller, author and actor, Órla McGovern.

There are three different types of storytelling at the event. They are Moth, Improvised and Freefall.

Moth style stories are short, true, thematic, and feature the teller as the central character. Ideally, the topic should be something that had an impact on the person – it can be funny but not necessarily.

Improvised stories are created on the spot and no two are the same. Format for these include 'Stories From The Hat' (where an audience member picks an object for the story) and 'Found In Translation' (where the tellers improvise and translate bilingually).

Free-fall stories are all other stories that fit the monthly theme – a true story about someone else, a piece of fiction, or a tall tale.

Stories run about eight or nine minutes but shorter is fine.

This is a night for oral storytelling, for tellers and listeners, with contributions from the M&B crew and the audience.

The live feed on Wednesday will start at 7.30 and the stories will begin soon after. There will be a short 'tea-break' mid-broadcast for 15 minutes.

Those who would like to tell stories online, can [email protected] in advance.
