Headford sculpture to celebrate lace-making

A new public artwork that promotes awareness of the community activity of lace-making and its history will be provided in Headford after Galway County Council gave planning permission for the structure.

The Headford Lace Project sought the permission to erect the artwork in St George’s Square at a site that has recently been renovated, with new paving and traffic-calming measures.

There is public seating in the location while the Square hosts a weekly local market and also serves as a performance location during festivals.

It’s proposed to erect a new heart-shape metal frame at this location and the Council has confirmed that a site has been agreed with the local traders and community.

According to artist and designer Róisín de Buitléar, the 2.5-metre-high sculpture will have a design that focuses on Headford lace. The heart-shape will be made of a painted metal framework that rotates in situ.

Members of the community can string a cord along this framework to create different patterns, using lace-making techniques. The proposed cord is paracord made of several nylon strands that are durable and weather resistant.

According to the planning application, the sculpture will allow light to pass through and create a lace heart shape in shadow. The proposed location is exposed to sunlight throughout the day.
