Galway’s emerging artists and organisers have a new platform for their considerable talents this weekend, with a showcase for the cream of local talent taking place across a whole plethora of venues in the city. The inaugural Black Gate Introducing festival is a collaboration between some of Galway’s most effective facilitators and a merging of established events in Eclectics, Free House, A Modern Movement and Livefeed.

Among the venues housing the festival are Áras na nGael, the Loft, Róisín Dubh, Nun’s Island Theatre and the Galway Mechanics’ Institute.

It is an invigorating festival for the city in more ways than one. In David Boland, John O’Connor and Jake Tiernan, Black Gate Introducing lies in the hands of three of Galway’s most talented and attentive organisers.

It makes use of venues and spaces in a manner that proves how sustainable the scene can be, even when it lacks significant resources. And with acts as talented and wide-ranging as Jossle, Bríd Kenny, Eoin Dolan and Hannah Hession, it showcases the best of the extensive list of genres that have surfaced locally in recent years.

“I think a music scene is like an ecosystem,” David Boland explains.

“It might be a bit cliché but especially at a DIY, emerging level, it’s as much about the people facilitating things happening as the artists who are a part of it.

“This festival was initially a collaboration between myself, John O’Connor from A Modern Movement, and Jake Tiernan from Free House. John and I had bandied about the idea of doing a partnership festival – making something that’s easy to run and that capitalises on our strengths and our existing networks.
