In June, Donegal four-piece Sheerbuzz ended a three-year break from releasing new material with the launch of Talk To. The single was the outfit’s most polished and refined effort to date, marking a sonic departure from their gritty, blues-rock back catalogue. Both musically and as people, childhood friends Lachlann O’Fionnáin, Lughan Devenny, Adam Grady and Evan McGinty have grown up over the last few years.

This Saturday, Sheerbuzz are set to headline A Modern Movement in The Loft alongside Shark School, Pavillion and Lifts.

Frontman Lachlann, also a member of garage punk three-piece Adore, has been living in Galway for the last year or two, but this gig will be Sheerbuzz’s first in the city.

“There was a couple of years of Covid and that,” Lachlann says of the gap between the band’s last two releases.

“All of the music we’ve put out until now has been self-funded through gigs and selling t-shirts and stuff like that, so we had no real band income in that time.

“We also had college – I was doing my Leaving Cert in 2021… It was a lot of things coming together and a lot of change. We did keep writing and in those couple of years we almost completely changed the set and wrote a bunch of new tunes. When gigs came back, we had enough to keep us going.

“We do like to take our time with stuff. I don’t really believe in rushing songs out. I have a lot of faith in the effect of live gigs on the writing process.

“When you’re playing something live, you can feel where a song loses its momentum. We weren’t too keen on releasing something before we’d actually played it to people.”
