A virtual event celebrating the launch of the latest novel from Claregalway writer Caoilinn Hughes will be hosted by Cúirt International Festival of Literature in partnership with One World Publications and Dubray Books next Wednesday, July 22, at 7pm. Caoilinn will be in conversation with fellow author Kevin Barry about her new novel The Wild Laughter, and the event is free.

The Wild Laughter, published by One World is a snapshot of contemporary Ireland – of a family and a nation suddenly unmoored, it explores cowardice and sacrifice, faith rewarded and abandoned, the stories we tell ourselves and the ones we resist.

The book has been hailed as ‘powerful’ and ‘darkly adventurous’ by The Guardian, while The Irish Times described it as ‘an exhilarating and moving story of an Ireland in disarray’.

This is the second novel from Caoilinn Hughes, whose debut work of fiction, Orchid and the Wasp, won the Collyer Bristow Prize and was shortlisted for the Hearst Big Book Awards and the Butler Literary Award. It was longlisted for the Authors' Club Best First Novel Award.

She is also a poet and has published one collection, Gathering Evidence, as well as having had her work featured in literary magazines such as Granta, POETRY, Tin House, Best British Poetry and BBC Radio 3. She has a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and she was recently Visiting Writer at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

Caoilinn’s short fiction won her The Moth International Short Story Prize 2018 and an O.Henry Prize in 2019.
